Cruising through the Norwegian fjords offers an unparalleled escape and way to see the fjords (I mean, you are cruising on them, not just seeing them from the shore). Witnessing the towering cliffs, cascading waterfalls, and serene waters is a dream come true for many.
However, packing for such a unique adventure can be challenging. With so many different ports and activities to choose from, and the Norwegian ever-changing weather, it’s not straight forward.
This blog post aims to guide you on what to wear for a Norwegian fjord cruise in May, June, July and August (so, as mentioned; the summer season), ensuring you’re comfortable and stylish as you explore these breathtaking landscapes.

What to Wear on a Norwegian Fjord Cruise
When preparing for a Norwegian fjords cruise, it’s essential to consider the varying climates you might encounter. The weather in Norway can be unpredictable, with changing temperatures and unexpected rain showers. The one thing I say on repeat to my guests when I’m guiding every summer is; Layers, layers, layers!
Seriously, though. Packing and dressing in layers will allow you to adapt easily to any changes that will come your way. Even in the summer.
Side note: This packing list is for those going on a cruise to Norway. If you’re taking a cruise elsewhere, you might want to check out my all-inclusive packing guide instead.
Dressing for a cruise on the fjords (Quick Guide)
Start with a breathable base layer, which will be your first line of defense against the chill. Next, add a warm fleece or wool sweater for insulation. You can check out my favorite Norwegian/Scandinavian sweaters here.
Finally, top everything off with a waterproof jacket to shield you from rain and wind. Norwegians swear by these kinds of jackets, even in the summer.
This combination will keep you warm and dry while still allowing you to enjoy the sights. Don’t forget to bring comfortable jeans or hiking pants, as these will serve you well both onboard and during shore excursions.
Footwear is another critical consideration. Opt for waterproof boots that offer good traction for exploring the fjords, especially if you’re hiking.
These will keep your feet warm and dry and prevent slipping on potentially wet surfaces. Keep your outfit practical yet stylish with accessories like a cozy hat and a scarf to add a touch of personality to your ensemble while also providing extra warmth.
What to Pack for a Norwegian Fjords Cruise
The list below includes items that I would personally pack and wear when visiting western Norway’s cruise ports (if you didn’t know, I grew up around Flåm, live in Bergen, and go to Olden and Geiranger every week during the summer months as a guide – so it’s safe to say I know what I’m talking about).
Feel free to skip right to the list below at this point if you prefer to get straight to it.
Your packing list for a Norwegian fjord cruise should be as versatile as the landscape itself. Start with essential clothing such as tops and bottoms that can be mixed and matched. This will maximize your outfit choices without overpacking (you wan’t to leave space for shopping!).
Include a few long-sleeved shirts and a couple of lightweight sweaters to layer under your waterproof jacket.
Given the possibility of rain, a compact umbrella or poncho can be a lifesaver. Often cruise ships will have these to lend to passengers as needed, so do check this before you pack it.
If you plan to explore the fjords actively (which I recommend!), consider adding a pair of binoculars to your list for observing wildlife and distant landscapes. A sturdy daypack will hold all your essentials during excursions, ensuring your hands are free to snap photos of the awe-inspiring scenery.
If you don’t have a good backpack already, these Scandinavian backpacks are already tried and tested in Norway.
Lastly, pack a swimsuit. Many cruise lines offer heated pools or hot tubs onboard, perfect for relaxing after a day of exploring. A swimsuit will also come in handy if your cruise ship has a sauna or spa, allowing you to unwind in style. OR, if you want to explore some of the local saunas at your port (the Fjord Sauna in Flåm is one of my favorite activities there, for example!).

Frequently Asked Questions
Below I have tried to answer some common questions about cruising on the Norwegian fjords. Whether you are going on a week-long cruise covering several ports, or joining a shorter fjord cruise from Bergen or Flåm, for example, I hope these answers are helpful!
What month is best to cruise the Norwegian fjords?
The best time to sail through the Norwegian Fjords mainly depends on what you hope to experience. For warmer weather and extended daylight, consider cruising from May to September. During these months, you can enjoy lush greenery and vibrant wildflowers, making it ideal for outdoor activities.
However, if you aim to witness the mystical Northern Lights, plan your trip between late September and March. This period offers shorter days but magical, aurora-lit nights. Here’s my complete guide to the best time to visit Norway for the Northern Lights.
Regardless of the season, each offers its unique charm, and cruise lines often provide tailored itineraries to highlight the best features of each time of year. Consider your priorities when deciding the best month for your cruise.
What is the weather like on a Norwegian fjords cruise in May (and other months)?
May marks the beginning of the cruising season in Norway, with mild temperatures ranging from 40°F to 60°F. The weather is generally pleasant, though occasional rain showers can occur.
June and July bring warmer temperatures and the phenomenon of the Midnight Sun in Northern Norway, where the sun barely sets, extending daylight hours for exploration. August remains warm, though rain becomes more frequent as the season progresses.
By September, temperatures begin to drop, signaling autumn’s arrival. Leaves change color, creating a picturesque backdrop against the fjords’ towering cliffs.
October and November are cooler, often accompanied by rain or early snowfall at higher altitudes, while winter months bring colder temperatures and a chance to see snow-covered landscapes.

Is it cold on a Norwegian fjord cruise?
While Norwegian fjord cruises can be chilly, particularly during the early spring and late autumn months, they aren’t usually uncomfortably cold. Proper layering and waterproof clothing will keep you warm and snug, enabling you to fully immerse yourself in the experience.
Is the sea rough in the Norwegian fjords cruise?
One of the advantages of cruising the Norwegian fjords is the typically calm waters. The fjords are sheltered by high cliffs and mountains, creating a natural barrier that protects against harsh ocean currents and winds. This makes for a smooth sailing experience, even for those prone to seasickness.
However, the North Sea, which you may traverse before entering the fjords, can be rough. Choosing a larger cruise ship equipped with stabilizers can help minimize the effects of any choppy waters. Planning and preparing can enhance your overall cruising experience, ensuring your trip is as smooth as possible.
And, as I say to guests visiting Norway with Adventures by Disney when it comes to motion sickness on land; don’t be a hero. If you’re prone to motion sickness (or sea sickness in this instance), come prepared. Bring medicine if you need it, wrist bands or patches like these – just in case.
What to wear on a summer cruise to Norway?
If you’ve made it this far in this article, I hope you have a decent answer to this yourself by now. But, I’ll summarise.
Summer cruises to Norway call for a blend of light and practical clothing. While daytime temperatures can be comfortably warm, evenings and early mornings may remain cool. Pack breathable tops, light sweaters, and a couple of pairs of jeans or casual trousers.
For days spent onboard, consider bringing casual resort wear like sundresses or shorts, paired with sandals or comfortable sneakers. Don’t forget your hiking gear if you plan on taking advantage of the numerous excursions available. A thin, waterproof jacket is essential for summer showers and windy days on deck.
What month is best to cruise Norwegian fjords?
The optimal cruising month depends on your preferences and priorities. For warmer temperatures, extended daylight, and access to outdoor activities, consider cruising between May and September. These months offer prime conditions for hiking, wildlife spotting, and basking in the Midnight Sun’s glow.
For those eager to experience the Northern Lights’ allure, plan your visit between late September and March. While the temperatures are cooler, the opportunity to witness this natural wonder makes the cooler weather worthwhile.
