This post is for you if you are looking for what to pack for an all inclusive trip, whether it’s your first time staying at an all-inclusive resort or you’ve been to several but want to check if you’ve missed something while packing.

Side note: an all-inclusive holiday is pretty similar to going on a cruise. However, the packing is a little different, so if you are planning a cruise, check out my cruise packing list next, or more specifically; my Norwegian fjord cruise packing list!

What is an All-Inclusive Resort?

An all-inclusive resort is truly a vacationer’s dream come to life. When I say ‘all-inclusive’, I’m talking about a resort experience where virtually everything is included in one upfront price.

Typically, this covers your room accommodations, meals, drinks (yes, even the alcoholic ones), and a variety of recreational activities and entertainment options. Some resorts even include gratuities and airport transfers in the deal.

These holiday havens are dotted around the world, with a high concentration in sun-soaked destinations like the Caribbean, Mexico, and parts of Southeast Asia.

The beauty of staying at an all-inclusive resort is the simplicity of budgeting for your trip—once you’re there, you can indulge in the array of amenities without repeatedly reaching for your wallet.

What is included when you stay at an all-inclusive resort?

  • Accommodation
  • Meals
  • Non-alcoholic Drinks
  • Alcoholic Drinks (usually local spirits, wine and beer)

Tip: it is always helpful to read all kinds of fine print when booking an all inclusive holiday. Check the hotel website for a list of what restaurants and bars are included, and what opening hours they all have. I have been to all-inclusive hotels in the past where there was only one nighttime bar included in the all inclusive package, and it was located far away from any of the entertainment and activities from the resort. Disappointing, to say the least!

In my opinion, the best all-inclusive resorts are ones that have a la carte restaurants included in their packages, and not just the buffets. I’ve been to a few of these in the past, and you’ll find lots of them in Mexico and the Caribbean.

Insider Tips for Visiting an All-Inclusive Resort

There are a few things you should know before visiting an all-inclusive resort (that I didn’t until I went for the first time). Now that I have done all-inclusive holidays in Egypt, Türkiye, Mexico, Spain and the Dominican Republic, I have learned a few things.

Below are four things I wish I knew before visiting my first all-inclusive hotel:

Bracelets (or similar) color system: When you check into an all-inclusive resort, you will be given a room key and usually a bracelet with a specific color or mark on it. The bracelet indicates to the staff at the resort “which” all-inclusive package you are on. Some hotels have various “levels” of their all-inclusive offers, which can include premium spirits and even separate “VIP” beach clubs for those with a higher level package (something I experienced at the Grand Fiesta Coral Bay in Cancun).

A La Carte restaurants: Most all-inclusive resorts will have a la carte restaurants on site, in addition to the standard buffet restaurants. Usually, it’s the buffet restaurant that is included in the all-inclusive package, and then the a la carte ones come at a charge. Double check this before you go, and consider if it is worth paying a little extra for a nicer dining experience one or two nights during your stay.

Discounts: So many travelers miss this, so make sure you don’t! Very often, the different packages are offered discounts in and around the resort, such as on spa treatments and packages! Always check the information available in your room when you arrive, so you don’t pay full price for a massage if you don’t have to.

Tipping at all-inclusive resorts: Tipping is not always necessary at all-inclusive resorts, as the staff are already being paid for their services. However, if you receive exceptional service, it is always appreciated to leave a small tip in recognition. Some resorts may also have a “no tipping” policy, so make sure to check before leaving any tips.

I have personally found that when traveling to areas where there are a lot of American tourists (such as the Hotel Zone in Cancun or the beach clubs in Cabo), the staff expect to be tipped. In destinations with mostly European visitors, where tipping isn’t as customary, the staff do not expect it to the same extent. It is always appreciated to leave a tip for the cleaners at the end of your stay.

All Inclusive Packing List

Now for the main event: my packing list for all inclusive resorts!

Below is everything I am bringing on my upcoming all-inclusive trips (as I am writing this I have two booked over the next couple of months), including things I’ve wished I brought in the past.

I have tried my best to make the list user friendly, by adding headings where applicable.

Items for Your Suitcase

Your starting point is a lightweight suitcase with enough room for your essential items. Think durable, wheelie luggage that’s easy to maneuver, especially if you might need to wheel it across sandy beaches or cobbled pathways.

When it comes to the essentials, be sure to pack:

  • Reef Safe Sunscreen: Whether you’re lounging in the tropical sun or snorkeling the rich marine life, you’ll want to ensure your skin is protected. Many all-inclusive resorts are in vital ecological zones, so it’s crucial to use sunscreen that won’t harm the local environment. I learned this when I started diving, and on my first visit to Mexico (where in some areas they only allow reef safe sunscreen).
  • Flip Flops: You’ll live in these, so pack a high-quality and comfortable pair. I have made the mistake if leaving mine at home in the past, and ended up having to pay for an expensive pair at the resort. Don’t do the same.
  • Workout clothes and shoes: Most all-inclusive resorts have great gym amenities, and often they also have activities such as zumba, aerobics and even beach yoga classes! So, if you like staying active on holiday, make sure to pack a set of workout clothes for your trip.
  • Swimwear: This one goes without saying. Whether you are packing for Cabo or Playa del Carmen, this should be in your suitcase.
  • A mini first aid kit: It’s better to be safe than sorry when it comes to first-aid. The basics should include band-aids, antiseptic cream, and blister plasters for those inevitable sunburns and sandy feet.
  • Beach Cover-up: A stylish beach cover-up is essential not only for transitioning smoothly from poolside lounging to resort activities but also for protecting your skin from the sun’s intense rays during the hottest parts of the day.
  • Beach Tote: A spacious and durable beach tote is a must-have to carry all your seaside essentials – from your reef-safe sunscreen to your favorite novel – making your transition to the beach or pool both stylish and practical.
  • Toiletries: Remember to pack travel-sized versions of your must-have toiletries, including toothpaste, shampoo, conditioner, and aloe vera gel for soothing sun-kissed skin.
  • Bug Spray: Don’t let pesky insects ruin your tropical paradise experience; include a good bug spray in your packing list to keep bites at bay and enjoy uninterrupted sunsets on the beach. Many all-inclusive resorts will have diffusers on the outdoor tables to keep the bugs away, but this isn’t always a given.
  • Pyjamas: Comfortable pyjamas are a must for ensuring a good night’s sleep after a day full of activities, allowing you to wake up refreshed and ready for another day of vacation bliss.
  • Beach Hat: Providing not only a fashionable accessory to your beach ensemble, a broad-brimmed beach hat is crucial for shielding your face and eyes from the intense tropical sun, reducing the risk of sunburn and heatstroke. It also looks great when posing for pictures at beach clubs.
  • Lightweight rain jacket: While most tropical destinations are known for their sunny weather, it’s always good to be prepared for unexpected showers. A lightweight rain jacket will come in handy.
  • Socks and underwear: Although you’ll likely be spending most of your time in swimsuits and other warm-weather clothing, it’s important not to forget the essentials like socks and underwear. These can often be overlooked when packing for a beach vacation but are necessary items for comfort and hygiene.
  • Rash guard: A rash guard is a must-have for those planning on spending a lot of time in the water. Not only does it provide protection from the sun, but it also helps prevent chafing and irritation from saltwater and sand.
  • Sunglasses: Don’t make the same mistake as me, leaving all your sunglasses back home. Sunglasses is at the top of the list of things I forget to pack when going on holiday, and it’s always so annoying. Note: If they are expensive ones, put them in your carry-on.

Casual Resort Wear (Dress Code Edition)

Most all-inclusive resorts have relaxed dress codes, ensuring a stress-free vacation. However, it’s always a good idea to double-check to be on the safe side. Even if they do require more than swimwear, you can rest assured that the outfits won’t be anything too formal or rigid.

When it comes to dining, it’s generally not acceptable to wear swimwear, but you can relax at the pool bar without any concerns. To make sure you’re well-prepared, here are some outfit suggestions for both women and men:

  • Women: I recommend that you pack a few breezy sundresses that will keep you cool and stylish throughout the day. Additionally, consider bringing a pair of resort shorts and some nice sandals for a casual yet chic look. For those cooler evenings, a light shawl or sarong can serve as a versatile beach cover-up or a stylish accessory to drape over your shoulders.
  • Men: For a comfortable and versatile wardrobe, pack a few pairs of chino shorts and complement them with some polo shirts. This combination will cover most bases, allowing you to effortlessly transition from daytime activities to evening gatherings. The good news is that there’s no need to worry about packing a tie or jacket – after all, you’re on vacation!

By following these recommendations, you’ll be well-prepared and ready to enjoy your vacation with confidence and style.

All Inclusive Carry-on Essentials

In today’s age, it’s hard to leave our tech behind, even in paradise. Additionally, there are certain things you want to make sure are in your carry-on and not your checked luggage. Make sure to pack your:

  • Camera: To capture those beautiful moments. If you’re a blogger like me, you’ll also want to bring a tripod.
  • Chargers and Adapters: To keep all your devices juiced up. Always check which adapter you may need for your destination before you go.
  • Kindle or Tablet: For those relaxing afternoons with a book. I have been obsessed with my Kindle for years (ever since I had to leave books behind in Playa del Carmen because I couldn’t fit them in my suitcase). It’s the perfect beach companion.
  • Travel Speaker: For listening to music in your room whilst getting ready or just watching the sunset.
  • Medication management: Make sure to bring along any prescription medications, and a few common over-the-counter meds for headaches, tummy upsets, or allergies. If traveling with prescription meds, make sure to have your prescription on you (and to always keep it with the medication).
  • Sunglasses: Yes, I’m mentioning them twice, because I have forgotten them so often. Essential for protecting your eyes from the harsh glare of the sun while enhancing your vacation style. Plus, you can never have too many pairs!
  • If you are traveling for long: noise-cancelling headphones and a comfortable travel pillow.
  • Dive computer: This one is for the divers out there (like myself). When traveling for a dive trip, I always makes sure my dive computer is in my carry-on. Also; if you’re an old-school diver (also like myself), don’t forget your log book!
  • Portable charger: Keep your devices charged on the go with a portable charger. Whether you’re using your phone for navigation, taking photos, or staying connected with loved ones, this is a must.
  • Hydrating spray or face mask for the plane: The dry air on planes can wreak havoc on your skin. Keep it hydrated with a refreshing spray or nourishing mask. When I was traveling Business Class with Qatar Airlines for the first time, I got a hydration spray in the complimentary amenities kit. I have never traveled without it since! It does wonders for my face after a long flight.

Don’t forget to load up your devices with some books or movies for those long travel days.

Packing tip: I use makeup bags and organizers for my cords and chargers (all though you can of course use a dedicated electronics organizer as well) in my carry-on. I also use a makeup pouch for my “essentials” on an airplane, such as my passport, chapstick, Airpods and credit card. Basically; things I may need *during* the plain ride and want easy access to.

All-inclusive Packing hacks

Below are a few essentials for packing for an all-inclusive holiday. I have learned over the years that these are absolutely vital for not only making packing a breeze, but also for keeping you organized on your trip.

  • Travel jewelry case: To avoid the tangled mess that I once encountered, invest in a handy travel jewelry case (like this one on Amazon). It will keep your favorite pieces organized and ready to wear. Plus, you’ll avoid the heartache of losing that one earring that goes perfectly with your evening outfit.
  • Packing cubes: These handy travel organizers are perfect for keeping your clothes and accessories neatly packed and organized. With multiple compartments and a compact design, they make it easy to find what you need while maximizing your luggage space. My life changed when I realised I could use them to pack and organise outfits, and not just types of clothing! Now, I pack a full outfit per packing cube (sometimes 2-3 outfits in the bigger cubes).
  • Luggage strap or cover: Keep your suitcase secure and protected with a sturdy luggage strap or a durable cover. Not only does it add an extra layer of security, but it also helps in identifying your luggage on the airport carousel. My suitcase is black, and without my bright luggage strap and luggage cover (with palm trees and flamingos on it), I would never recognize it!
  • Hanging toiletries bag: Say goodbye to rummaging through your toiletries! A hanging toiletries bag allows you to keep your essentials organized and easily accessible in your hotel bathroom. With multiple compartments and a hook for hanging, it’s a convenient travel companion. I have loved this one for years!
  • Beach towel clips: Enjoy a relaxing day at the beach without your towel blowing away. Beach towel clips keep your towel securely in place, even on windy days. They are lightweight, easy to use, and a must-have for beach lovers.
  • Refillable water bottle: Stay hydrated on the go with a refillable water bottle. Not only does it help reduce plastic waste, but it also ensures you have access to clean drinking water wherever you are. Often the all-inclusive resort water stations only offer tiny glasses to refill, so a proper bottle will have you covered.
  • Door lock: This was recommended by a flight attendant on Tiktok, and I have never forgotten it. Easy to install and compact enough to fit in your bag, it provides an extra layer of security for hotel rooms or other accommodations.
  • Waterproof phone case (unless you have an action camera): Protect your phone from water damage with a waterproof phone case. Whether you’re lounging by the pool or exploring water-based activities, a waterproof case ensures your phone stays safe and dry.
  • Playing cards: Bring entertainment wherever you go with a deck of playing cards. Whether it’s a long flight, a rainy day, or a social gathering, playing cards offer endless opportunities for fun and bonding with fellow travelers. My friends and I always have a game of Liverpool going when we travel!
  • TSA-Approved Luggage Lock: Keep your belongings safe and secure with a TSA-approved luggage lock. These locks are designed to be opened by TSA agents for inspection without damaging your luggage, giving you peace of mind during your travels.
  • Swimsuit wet bag: A swimsuit wet bag is a must-have for beach vacations. It keeps your wet swimsuit separate from the rest of your belongings. Usually when staying at an all-inclusive hotel you’ll end up going on excursions and tours (I know Cancun has loads of great day trips, for example!). This often includes a swimming opportunity, before getting back on the bus for more sightseeing. A wet bag is essential then!
  • Scarf or scrunchie with a hidden pocket: This is a clever and discreet way to keep your valuables safe while traveling. Whether it’s holding extra cash or keys, you can have peace of mind knowing they are securely hidden in your scarf or scrunchie (this is the original hidden pocked scrunchie, and I highly recommend it).
  • A tumbler: I had to add this to the list after my amazing trip to Punta Cana, where I noticed lots of travelers walking up to the bars with tumblers (think Stanley cup style). The bartenders were more than happy to fill up the tumblers with ice and cocktails, and I wish I brought my own – those drinks don’t stay cool for long in the Caribbean heat!

Frequently Asked Questions about Packing for an All-Inclusive Resort

Below are the most frequently asked questions I could think of about making a packing list for an all-inclusive trip – answered! Let me know in the comments if you have any more questions, and I am happy to answer them.

How much should I pack for a week-long stay at an all-inclusive resort?

Aim to pack versatile clothing that can mix and match for different occasions. You will need swimwear, evening attire for dinners, casual clothes for daytime, and perhaps one or two formal outfits for special events. It’s advisable to pack for 7-10 days to account for any unexpected situations or outfit changes.

Are there any specific dress codes for all-inclusive resorts?

Most all-inclusive resorts have dress codes for their restaurants. Typically, beachwear is only acceptable at the pool or beach areas. For dinner, men may be required to wear long pants and closed-toe shoes, while women might opt for sundresses or casual evening wear.

Should I bring my own sunscreen?

Yes, it’s recommended to bring sunscreen as purchasing it at the resort can be costly. Check TSA guidelines if you’re flying, and consider travel-sized, reef-safe sunscreen to protect marine life.

What essential items are often forgotten when packing for a resort stay?

Items commonly overlooked include chargers, sunglasses, hats for sun protection, and any necessary medications. A reusable shopping bag or tote can also come in handy for carrying items to the beach or pool.

Can I bring my own snacks and drinks to an all-inclusive resort?

While all-inclusive packages often cover food and drinks, bringing some snacks can be beneficial, especially for excursions or for when the dining areas are closed. However, check the resort’s policy as some may have restrictions on outside food and drinks.

Is there anything I should not pack for my resort stay?

Avoid bringing items that are readily available at the resort, such as towels or hairdryers, to save space in your luggage. Also, refrain from packing prohibited items like certain types of sporting equipment or potentially dangerous goods. Always check with your airline for luggage restrictions.

How to pack light for all-inclusive resort?

Use packing cubes when packing for your all-inclusive trip, and packing light will be easier. I split my packing cubes up according to outfit, and always have one with dresses and another with shorts and tops. A third one carries swimsuits and underwear, and that’s all I need!

Packing for an all-inclusive trip: Final Tips

This planning stage is just as important as what goes inside your suitcase. Make copies of your passport, reservation confirmations, and any necessary visas.

I have a photo of my passport in my phone at all times, just in case.
