Quick Bergen Travel Guide
Where to stay: Hotel Norge is a centrally located, higher-end hotel that is perfect for any traveler – and my favorite (their scrambled eggs at breakfast are the best in Norway). If you are looking for something in the historic city center, Clarion Havnekontoret is just a stone’s throw from the UNESCO-listed Bryggen. For something more budget-friendly, CityBox and Moxy are great alternatives!
Where to eat: I have so many favourite restaurants in Bergen, and have covered them all in this guide. Don’t miss Bryggeloftet (traditional, Norwegian), Poca Madre (Mexican), Boccone (Italian) and JAJA (International Street Food).
Top activities and tours in Bergen:
- Mostraumen Fjord Cruise from Bergen (check out the best fjord cruises from Bergen in this guide)
- Seeing the UNESCO listed Bryggen (on your own or on a walking tour)
- Viking ship fjord cruise
- Hiking or taking the funicular up Mount Fløyen
- Going on a day trip to Flåm and the Nærøyfjord
Packing for Bergen: My golden rule when packing and dressing for any destination in Norway is layers. Layers, layers, layers – and Bergen is no different. Additionally, Bergen can be quite a rainy city, so a waterproof jacket such as this one is ideal. Good shoes for walking around the city is a must too (the city is very walkable).
Getting to Bergen: I have covered how to get from the airport to the city center in detail here.
Getting Around: Skyss is the official public transportation system in Bergen. Download the app Skyss Billett (ticket) to have tickets on your phone.
7 Best Italian Restaurants in Bergen
I decided to write this guide because I have already covered the top 10 restaurants in the city, in addition to the best cafes in Bergen, and noticed that I kept wanting to add Italian restaurants to the top 10 list.
Whilst one of these did make the top 10 list (care to guess which?), I decided I couldn’t include this many Italian restaurants, even though it is my favorite cuisine.
Bergen is home to many great Italian eateries, and more keep popping up (I’m not the only one who loves pizza, pasta and wine – and whether I’m on a food tour in Rome or browsing the menus in Bergen, it’s what I’m looking for!).
#1 Pergola
Pergola is the restaurant that made it to my top 10 list. It has been a favorite of mine and my friends for years, and even though it is located in a street busy with several restaurants, it always feels like a hidden spot away from the crowds.
Probably because they can’t seat that many people at the same time.
Nestled in a narrow alley, this delightful Italian restaurant and their wine cellar immerses you in the ambiance of an authentic Italian town, with laundry hanging out to dry above your head as you walk in. With its intimate atmosphere and cozy decor, boasting around 13-15 tables, Pergola can feel pretty exclusive.
Not to mention the wine cellar itself, a haven of over 350 carefully selected wines, making it undoubtedly the best in Bergen. And you know me, a good wine selection always gets me.
The menu, though simple, is an exquisite delight, focusing on delectable pizza and charcuterie boards. For those who adore sharing, a variety of pizzas with ever-changing toppings await.
And if you’re a fan of charcuterie (aren’t we all?), rest assured, you can customize your board to cater to your group’s size. Savor these delectable treats alongside your chosen wine, and relish in the moment!
Address: Nedre Korskirkeallmenningen 9B
Best For: A romantic dinner, quiet night with friends, wine lovers
#2 Bien Pizzabar
Bien Pizzabar is a new and exciting addition to the Italian culinary scene in Bergen. Since its opening in 2023, this pizzabar has quickly gained popularity among both locals and tourists.
Set in unique and historic quarters at Danmarks Plass just outside of the city center, the restaurant venue itself is a captivating sight, as it used to be an old pharmacy dating back to 1939. They’ve kept the apothecary counter and all the shelves intact, so there’s quite a lot to explore around the restaurant.
Still, what sets Bien Pizzabar apart is their dedication to serving authentic Neapolitan pizza, prepared in the traditional Naples-style.
The combination of the alluring ambiance, delicious pizza, and the establishment’s film noir-inspired vibe creates an experience that is truly unforgettable for any traveler visiting Bergen.
If you are staying at the Moxy or the Citybox (both great budget-friendly hotels in Bergen), you’ll find that Bien Pizzabar is just a stone’s throw away.
I have had nothing but good dining experiences at Bien Pizzabar. I went with my parents not long after they opened, and had no idea what to expect. All though I did have high expectations, because Bien’s other venture (Bien Snackbar) is known for the best burgers in town.
We all ordered different pizzas to get a taste of their diverse menu. What I loved the most was their unique twist on the traditional Italian style by incorporating Norwegian and local ingredients. Imagine a quattro formaggio (four cheese) pizza with cheese from just outside of Bergen!
We all loved our pizzas. The combination of fresh ingredients and the Scandi twist truly elevated the taste to a whole new level. Not only was the food great, but the service was top-notch as well. It was a very windy evening, and the door to the outside kept blowing open, so the girl working had to lock it. As a result, she kept having to go over and personally greet everyone wanting to enter and exit (not necessarily common in Norwegian restaurants). It made for a charming touch to the service.
Best For: Pizza, history buffs will love this place (because of the old-school interior)
Location: Fjøsangerveien 30
#3 Boccone
Let me tell you about my go-to spot for ravioli in Bergen. When it comes to Italian food, Boccone takes the cake! It’s right by Den Blå Steinen, in the heart of Bergen, next to the fabulous Hotel Norge (which, by the way, is one of my top picks for hotels in the city).
You step into Boccone and it’s like stepping into a fancy Italian villa, all luxurious and upscale. Their menu isn’t as big as the next two on the list, but boy, do they know how to nail the details! Quality over quantity, my friend.
Now, let me tell you about my all-time favorite dish there – the Creamy Ravioli. It’s like a garlicky, cheesy dream come true. I swear, I could eat it every Sunday.
But hey, don’t sleep on their cannelloni and stone-oven pizzas either. They’re seriously delicious. Oh, and here’s a little not-so secret just for you – on Tuesdays, you can get their truffle pasta served from a Grana Padano wheel. It’s like a cheesy, truffle heaven! I tried it recently and let me tell you, it did not disappoint.
My dad also loves Boccone because it is the only Italian restaurant in the city (as far as I have seen – and I have been to them all) that serves a traditional Carbonara (without the cream). Most other Norwegian restaurants tend to serve it American style.
Best For: Foodies, their pasta, and the cheese wheel dish on Tuesdays
Address: Nedre Ole Bulls Plass 4
#4 Villani
Villani, located on the “restaurant street” Skostredet, never disappoints. This Italian joint, with a delightful Sicilian touch, takes you straight to the heart of Italy as soon as you walk in. The place has plenty of room inside, so it’s perfect for a big group of friends.
The menu at Villani is packed with amazing Italian classics – think mouthwatering pizzas, flavorful pastas, and an impressive selection of wines. The staff is super friendly and welcoming, adding to the warm and inviting vibe. You’ll easily get lost in delightful conversations throughout the night.
But what really makes Villani special is its enchanting outdoor seating area, a real haven in the summer months. Picture yourself soaking up the sun, sipping on a refreshing Aperol spritz, and treating yourself to some tasty focaccia, all while enjoying the lively atmosphere.
Trust me, waiting to be seated in this beautiful patio is totally worth it – it adds that extra touch of magic to your dining experience.
Villani is the epitome of an Italian paradise, where every little detail is carefully crafted to ensure you have an unforgettable time. Whether you’re a local or just visiting, this charming spot promises to take your taste buds on a journey and captivate your senses, leaving you with treasured memories of an authentic Italian culinary adventure.
Best For: Eating outdoors in the summer, drinks on the patio
Address: Skostredet 9a
🤩 I love this Bergen gastronomy tour because it includes a trip up Mount Fløyen with its epic views!
#5 Villa Paradiso
Okay, here’s the deal with Villa Paradiso. They opened in Bergen around March/April 2021, gaining popularity in Oslo. Their Grünerløkka location serves the best pizza in Oslo, hands down.
Now, in Bergen, it’s a different story. Their Ai Formaggi pizza is my personal favorite, but I wouldn’t go as far as saying it’s the best in town. However, their house focaccia is to die for. And their house wine is really good. The servers here know their stuff when it comes to wine, so they can recommend the perfect pairing.
Oh, and my favorite thing about Villa Paradiso: their wine is served in liter and half liter carafes. This makes it a great place for a long dinner with friends (and continuing with drinks after).
Speaking of pasta, they have a small selection, but let’s be real—the pizza is what you’re coming here for. They have a wood-burning oven that cooks pizza in about 60 seconds. Talk about fast!
I mostly recommend Villa Paradiso for their pizza, location and relaxed vibe. It’s the perfect place to chill, have great conversations, and enjoy some decent food. Plus, it’s conveniently located by Torgallmenningen, the city center square.
So, if you’re up for a laid-back dinner experience with friends, Villa Paradiso is definitely the spot. Don’t forget to grab their amazing red wine. Cheers!
Best For: Pizza, family friendly, wine night with friends
Address: Øvre Ole Bulls Plass 1
#6 Olivia
Now before you protest, let me be clear: I am aware that Olivia is a chain restaurant. In fact, I dare be so bold as to say that Olivia is the only chain restaurant in Norway that actually does a good job.
There used to be only one Olivia in Bergen, located right on the docks next to the fish market. This large restaurant covers two floors, and like Villani they have a nice outdoor seating area.
In 2023 they opened a second location, right by “Den Blå Steinen” (if you have read my Bergen guide, you’ll know that this is considered right in the city center).
Olivia is the place to go if you are craving Italian and are with a large group of friends. They have a big menu, so everyone is guaranteed to find something they want (whether that’s an entrecote, a wood-oven made pizza or a classic pasta di manzo).
They are great at serving large parties, and if you celebrate your birthday here you’ll get complimentary ice cream with a sparkler in it!
Best For: Central Location, birthday celebrations, large parties
Address: Torget 2 and Kong Olav Vs Plass 4
#7 Pasta Sentral
Pasta Sentral is an absolute gem for tourists visiting Bergen. As a family-friendly Italian restaurant, it offers an authentic dining experience with Italian chefs at the helm of the kitchen. The menu is a pasta lover’s paradise, featuring an extensive selection of delicious pasta dishes to choose from.
My favorite is the ravioli gorgonzola. Pasta Sentral is very popular for takeaway, and I know many locals who have ordered from here for years, but never stepped foot inside.
The interior is Disney-like, in my opinion, adding a touch of whimsy to your dining experience. And the best part? The house wine is not only exceptional but also very affordable.
So, whether you’re craving a comforting plate of spaghetti or a flavorful bowl of Alfredo, Pasta Sentral is the place to be.
Best For: Families, pasta
Address: Vestre Torggaten 5
Bergen Food Tours
If you’re a foodie visiting Norway, Bergen is a must-visit destination for its incredible food tours – it’s not just fjord cruises and sightseeing tours. While there are only a few food tours to choose from in the city, rest assured that each one is absolutely fantastic.
And by only a few, I mean literally three: there’s a private one, a tour including a trip up Fløyen, and a food and culture walking tour (the most popular). Bergen’s food tours offer a unique opportunity to explore the local culinary scene, uncover hidden gems, and indulge in mouthwatering delicacies.
From traditional Norwegian dishes to international flavors, these tours cater to every palate. Whether you’re a fan of seafood, Nordic cuisine, or simply want to experience the vibrant food culture, Bergen’s food tours will leave you craving for more. Don’t miss the chance to embark on a culinary adventure through this charming city.
🤩 If you want a private food tour in Bergen, this is the one I recommend!
Final Thoughts: Italian Restaurants in Bergen
In conclusion, if you ever find yourself in Bergen, Norway, be sure to explore the vibrant culinary scene and indulge in the wonders of Italian cuisine. Of course, I do not mean that you should skip New Nordic cuisine, the fish market or traditional restaurants such as Bryggeloftet (the best restaurant in the city, in my opinion).
