The moment I drove up the sweeping driveway and saw this beautiful country house emerge through the trees, I knew I was in for something special. But what really set The Falcondale apart wasn’t just its grandeur or stunning location – it was the warmth of the welcome.
From the moment I stepped through the door, I felt like part of the family. On my first visit, the receptionist even recognized my dress from my Instagram stories – a fun and unexpected moment that perfectly captured their attention to detail. And when I returned years later, I was welcomed back by name, which made me feel even more at home.
The Falcondale is one of my absolute favorite luxury hotels in Wales, and after two unforgettable stays, I can safely say it’s a place I’ll keep coming back to. Here’s why.
Atmosphere & First Impressions
For such a grand country house, The Falcondale feels surprisingly secluded and private, wrapped in lush greenery that makes it feel like a true countryside retreat. It’s the kind of place where you immediately slow down, with only rolling hills and woodlands stretching beyond its grounds.
What’s even more interesting is its subtle Mediterranean influence – apparently, the original owner honeymooned in Italy before building it, which explains why it has that timeless, villa-like charm.
Inside, the hotel strikes a perfect balance between grandeur and warmth. The sitting rooms are a particular highlight, having been fully updated since my first visit. Each has its own personality, with bold colors and striking attention to detail that make them feel both stylish and inviting.
I later learned that the new owners previously ran Plas Dinas Country House, another one of my favorite stays in Wales – so it’s no surprise that The Falcondale has been refreshed with such care.
Side note: Plas Dinas is just a stone’s throw from Caernarfon, and one of the best places to stay in North Wales, in my opinion!
Despite its elegance, the atmosphere here is more relaxed than many other country house hotels, making it easy to settle in and feel at home. One of my favorite little luxuries? The Scarlet Lounge has a discreet back door to the bar, meaning you can top up your wine without even leaving the room – a small touch, but one that perfectly sums up The Falcondale’s effortless, easygoing charm.

My Room at The Falcondale
After checking in, I spent a few hours working in the conservatory before making my way to my room. Getting there was an experience in itself – winding through staircases and hallways, I got a real sense of just how vast and beautiful this house is. I was staying in a suite on the top floor, with stunning views over the gardens and surrounding countryside.

The room was spacious and beautifully laid out, with a cozy sitting area, a large bathroom featuring both a deep tub and a huge shower, and plenty of natural light streaming through the windows. On my first visit, I made full use of the bathtub, enjoying a long, luxurious soak in the evening.
On my second visit, the weather was less kind, but I didn’t mind at all. I took my time in the morning, sipping French press coffee by the window, listening to the rain, and appreciating the excuse to stay inside and enjoy the peaceful atmosphere.
One of the things I love most about country house hotels like The Falcondale is how every room feels unique, with its own personality and charm. Returning years later to find myself in the same suite felt like a small, unexpected treat – one that made my stay even more special.
Exploring the Gardens & Grounds
One of the best things about The Falcondale is that it doesn’t just offer a place to stay – it invites you to slow down and explore. The hotel is surrounded by 14 acres of woodland and gardens, providing plenty of space to wander, breathe in the fresh country air, and feel completely removed from the outside world.
On my first visit in June, I was lucky enough to see the gardens in full bloom. The hydrangeas were particularly stunning, bursting with color and making the whole setting feel almost surreal. Walking among them, I had a real Alice in Wonderland moment – it felt like I had stepped into a hidden world of greenery and flowers, far away from everyday life.
Even in less favorable weather, the grounds still feel like a retreat. Whether it’s a crisp morning walk or simply standing outside for a moment of quiet, the setting at The Falcondale is one of the reasons it remains one of my favorite places to stay in Wales.

Relaxing in the Sitting Rooms & Working at The Falcondale
One of the things I love most about The Falcondale is how easy it is to settle in and feel at home. The sitting rooms, while grand and beautifully decorated, still have an intimate and inviting atmosphere.
I spent most of my time in the Scarlet Lounge, especially on my February visit, when the fireplace was roaring and the rain was lashing against the windows. It was the kind of place where you could curl up with a glass of wine, chat with fellow guests, or simply sit back and enjoy the peaceful surroundings. In fact, one evening, I got to know a lovely couple from Caerleon – fitting, since that was my next stop on this trip!
The Scarlet Lounge also gave me my perfect Lady Mary moment. As the evening light faded and the rain pounded against the large windows, I sat by the fire with a glass of wine in hand, feeling utterly relaxed. There’s something about The Falcondale that makes you want to slow down, take it all in, and imagine yourself in a period drama.
When I needed to get some work done, the conservatory was the perfect spot (on both of my visits). Bright and airy, with beautiful views over the gardens, it was peaceful even on a rainy day.
With no distractions from other guests, it was easy to sit back, sip my coffee wine, and power through my work – without ever wanting to leave.

Dining at The Falcondale
Dinner at The Falcondale was a highlight on both of my visits. Each time, I enjoyed a beautifully prepared three-course meal, served in an elegant yet relaxed setting. The food was fantastic, but what stood out just as much was the attentive and genuinely friendly service.
On my most recent visit, I ended up chatting with both of my servers about Onyx Storm, which had just been released – we quickly bonded over the fact that all three of us were reading it at the same time. It’s little moments like this that make a stay at The Falcondale feel personal and welcoming, rather than just another luxury hotel experience.
In addition to its fantastic dinner service, The Falcondale also offers afternoon tea and lunch in the conservatory, which can be booked even if you’re not staying overnight.
Given how peaceful and bright the space is, it’s the perfect setting for a leisurely meal, whether you’re celebrating something special or just indulging in a long, lazy lunch.

Final Thoughts: Why I Can’t Wait to Return
One of the things that sets The Falcondale apart from other country house hotels is how effortlessly comfortable and welcoming it feels. It has all the grandeur you’d expect from a historic estate, but without any of the stiffness – you don’t feel like you need to sit up straight and mind your manners at all times.
In fact, on one evening in the Scarlet Lounge, I was curled up on the sofa reading my Kindle with my shoes off, while a couple from Caerleon sat nearby, playing cards with their shoes off too. It’s that kind of place – laid-back, familiar, and effortlessly relaxing.
Although I loved my cozy winter retreat, if I were to return, I’d aim for an autumn visit. It would be the perfect time to enjoy chilly evenings by the fire while still having crisp autumn days to explore Ceredigion and the surrounding countryside.
Whether you’re visiting solo, as a couple, or with friends, The Falcondale is a place that truly suits all kinds of travelers. It’s the kind of hotel that draws you back, not just because of its setting or luxury, but because of how easy and enjoyable it is to simply be there.
