The Emerald Coast boasts stunning white sandy beaches, crystal clear turquoise waters, and an abundance of marine life, making it a perfect destination for beach enthusiasts.

I had the opportunity to move to the Emerald Coast 3 years ago and have never regretted it.

The different beaches and water access along the coast and islands have granted a wonderful opportunity for my family and myself to capture wonderful memories.

I personally live in Gulf Breeze 15 minutes away from Pensacola Beach and make every possible opportunity to go to the beach.

That begs the question, what are the best beach spots along Florida’s Emerald Coast?

The best beaches on the Emerald Coast are Pensacola Beach, Gulf Islands National Seashore, Navarre Beach, Princess Beach, Henderson Beach State Park, and many others to include resorts along the Destin – Sandestin strip reaching all the way to Grayton Beach State Park.

Below we will break down these sandy paradises and a little extra that you can do besides just relaxing at each location.

The 7 Best Beaches on the Florida Emerald Coast

White sands that squeak beneath your feet, waters that shift from emerald to turquoise based on the sky’s mood, and a coastline dotted with experiences waiting to happen.

From Pensacola Beach to Grayton Beach State Park, every beach tells its own story.

Strap in; we’re touring from West to East, uncovering the beaches that make the Emerald Coast a bucket-list must.

#1 Pensacola Beach

Pensacola Beach is a popular tourist spot on the Emerald Coast, known for its pristine beaches and diverse marine life, including colorful fish, dolphins, manatees, and even the occasional sighting of sharks.

The waters here give the option to access the beach attached to the Gulf of Mexico, where you can enjoy turquoise emerald waters on the best days, or the inshore section of the island.

The inward section is a much darker water and the visibility quite the opposite of the Gulf shoreline.

However, on the coastline of the island the waters are beautifully clear and there is plenty of space for relaxing, snorkeling, surfing, and on occasion paddle boarding stretching from Fort Pickens to the Gulf Islands National Seashore.

How to Get There

Despite what the name entails, this beach is not attached to the city of Pensacola.

If driving from Pensacola you need to cross the 3 mile bridge, which was recently rebuilt, and cross a toll bridge from Gulf Breeze.

The toll prices differ during the time of year visiting, but the toll earnings go towards keeping the beach clean for people and sea life alike to enjoy.

There are plenty of signs so you do not miss your exit.

What Else Besides the Beach?

There are many other activities to partake in while visiting Pensacola Beach.

This area acts as a smaller version of Destin, FL, if you have ever been, and hosts many events besides the shops and restaurants.

There are regular concerts hosted either on the shoreline or on the boardwalk that has a stage and is the center of attraction for fireworks.

Another big event to either keep an eye on is the Blue Angel show for holidays like Memorial Day Weekend, where you can enjoy the show right on the beach.

This island is quite small so traffic gets very congested during these large events.

I have personally had to sit in traffic for over 2 hours to go a mile and a half back to Gulf Breeze.

So if you are planning a visit during an event, plan to sleep within walking distance of the beach.

Regardless of an event, the Navy practices their routines and patterns near the beach for shows and can often be seen even when an event is not present.

Notable restaurants include The Grand Marlin, Peg Leg Pete’s, Crab’s, and Flounders.

#2 Gulf Islands National Seashore

Directly attached to Pensacola Beach is the Gulf Islands National Seashore.

This is a protected area that sits on either side of the previously mentioned beach town.

This is a wonderful opportunity to visit a beach destination where there are no large condos or buildings in sight.

There are several spots along the scenic road from Pensacola Beach to Navarre where you can pull over to park and enjoy the clear waters, some even include pavilions with outdoor grills for public use.

As of right now, the areas where you are able to grill are open to the public for free but have in the past required a toll to use.

Click here for directions to beaches along Gulf Islands National Seashore.

#3 Navarre Beach

Continuing East, Navarre Beach comes right off the scenic road and into the joining of the Gulf Coast to the inland water.

The water here is still clear from the coastline so you can most definitely enjoy your beach time here.

The pavilions and parking for beach access is much more friendly and abundant here so it would be a good time to stop off and take a dip in the water if you are traveling further.

How to Get There

From the West end you can take the Scenic road along the Gulf Islands National Seashore or go along Highway 98 from Gulf Breeze until you enter Navarre.

The access bridge will be on your right if you are coming from the West, and luckily there is no toll.

What Else Besides the Beach?

Besides the sand and waves, there are several restaurants to partake in within walking distance of the beach.

Like Pensacola Beach there is also a pier here where you can walk out a decent distance into the coast as well.

If you are looking for something for your children to occupy themselves, the city has recently rebuilt a playground and splash pad area just before turning onto the bridge to go to the beach.

There is also a unique McDonalds with an ocean theme you may not see anywhere else, including an ocean themed play area for the kids.

Heading back to the beach area there is also a Sea Turtle Conservation Center that you can visit to potentially see some rehabilitating sea turtles.

#4 Princess Beach

Bypassing through Navarre and heading past Fort Walton Beach we will enter Okaloosa Island.

This is the island that you would drive through while heading to Destin.

However, instead of driving past, there is much to offer here in beautiful beaches and activities.

The sand on Princess Beach has this white powdery texture that just melts in your hand.

There is beach access that sits halfway along the highway of Okaloosa Island and Destin.

There is a parking area where you can pull over to head into the beach area.

You can also access the beach on the boardwalk within the main city of Okaloosa.

On calm days the water shines a beautiful emerald green that is crystal clear, and absolutely perfect for relaxing on the beach.

How to Get There

Coming from the West end, heading to Okaloosa Island is as simple as following Highway 98 until you cross a bridge into the island.

From there continue straight passing all of the buildings until you see small sandy parking places with little walkway paths to go to the beach.

For directions to Princess Beach, click here.

What Else Besides the Beach?

Along Okaloosa Island there are many restaurants and even a small amusement area to partake in.

The boardwalk here allows beach access to wonderful spots to snorkel as well as hosted movie nights outside by the water.

Besides the usual happenings, there is also the Gularium, an aquarium that has just recently finished expanding their dolphin habitat and hosts shows and marine life encounters.

#5 Destin

There are several places within Destin to find breathtaking beaches, the issue is knowing what and where they are.

It can be a confusing place when you are not specifically sure where the public beach is since there are so many resorts within the city.

There are wonderful beach accesses and even snorkeling locations here since the waters are slightly smoother due to the curve of the harbor, which are perfect for those that want to snorkel but cannot swim.

Whatever the case, the water does seem smoother here and has more clear days it seems than the previously mentioned beaches; which is perfect for our beach trip opportunities.

Unlike our previous beaches though, EVERY single public beach will be crowded during the summer season; there is no getting away from the public here and I have not gone down during a good day to not see crowded beaches.

This is because all the resorts are lined along the shore and very noticeable the moment you hit Destin.

A Florida beach just before sunset, with dramatic clouds above the ocean and waves crashing over the white sand.

How to Get There

There is one main road going East and West from Highway 98; there is no way to miss it.

Below are locations within the city with public access from West to East:

There are a few others scattered around, however they are smaller and might not be worth heading to.

This is a personal compiled list of beaches that I have visited and was able to access after living in the area for a few years.

The first year here my wife and I drove in circles and got trapped in condo turnarounds for hours, so definitely stick with the list above.

What Else Besides the Beach?

Destin has everything but a theme park.

There are dozens of restaurants, a water park, arcades, and a boardwalk with attractions, bars, and food.

There is always something going on in this city so it is very crowded, especially during the summers.

However, this is the best place to get a deep sea fishing excursion or dolphin tour set up and this all can be found at the Destin boardwalk right after crossing the bridge.

There used to be concerts in Crab Island, which was a shallower part of water next to the Highway bridge, but the city shut down any events like this so now it is just a conglomeration of boats gathered up.

You can easily rent a boat or get a water taxi out to the middle if you are so inclined.

#6 Sandestin

Sandestin is much smaller than the city of Destin and is more residential instead of touristy.

Not to say that they do not have their condos and hotels, because there are plenty here; just that they are not as close together.

How to Get There

There are fewer spots in Sandestin for beach access, but it is not as crowded as Destin and at the same time is more inland on the island if that makes sense.

Sandtrap Road Beach directions are found here.

Topsail Hill Reserve Beach directions are found here.

What Else Besides the Beach?

Sandestin has an outdoor mall outlet that can be found near the Chick-fa-le that includes a Disney Outlet right off Highway 98.

The best attraction besides the beach would have to be The Village of Baytown Wharf; directions here.

Baytown Wharf has some carnival like attractions along with live outdoor music shows and Christmas events that you will not want to miss (only place in the area that has an ice skating rink during the holidays).

#7 Grayton Beach State Park

Grayton Beach State Park is a beach lover’s paradise, featuring a vibrant underwater world with colorful fish, fascinating rock formations, and even the occasional encounter with sea turtles.

I am going to include four locations here where you will be able to gain beach access leading up to Grayton State Park.

These spots are more off the beaten trail, but that only means it will be less crowded and you can still have a wonderful beach adventure with potential wild sea turtles.

How to Get There

Firstly we have Ed Walline Regional Beach access directions found here.

Blue Mountain Beach directions found here.

A spot just showing as “Beach Access” on maps directions found here.

And finally, Grayton Dunes Beach Access directions found here.

What Else Besides the Beach?

This area is very residential and has a few restaurants before you hit Panama City Beach.

If you are looking for a place to camp out, Grayton is your perfect site.

There are plenty of trails and beach walk areas to enjoy while still having the convenience of being close to the city.

Marine Life Encounters in the Emerald Coast

Colorful Fish Species and their Habitats

The waters of the Emerald Coast are home to a wide variety of fish species, including angelfish, butterflyfish, grouper, snapper, and many more.

Snorkelers can witness these vibrant creatures in their natural habitats.

Some notable fish specific species would definitely be the Red Snapper, Red Grouper, and Mahi.

You might not find these three while snorkeling but they are definitely prevalent throughout the area.

Another thing to note are the shark species in the area, list down below.

  • Bonnethead
  • Bull Shark
  • Blacktip Shark
  • Atlantic Sharp Nose Shark
  • Nurse Shark
  • Tiger Shark

Most of these species will not bother you, but regardless of the species, if you see a shark or any other predator while out snorkeling; calmly and quickly exit the water.

Encounter with Sea Turtles in their Natural Habitat

Beach goers on the Emerald Coast often have the incredible opportunity to encounter sea turtles, including the majestic loggerhead and the endangered green sea turtles, as they gracefully swim through the waters.

During my time here I have yet to encounter a wild sea turtle while snorkeling; I have while diving near Navarre Beach though.

If you plan everything right you can witness the hatching of sea turtles that local colleges volunteer to tape off and allow public viewing while they make their race into the water.

Besides these two natural spots there are two rehabilitation locations one in Navarre Beach and the other in the Gulfarium in Okaloosa Island.

Side note: Another epic place to swim with sea turtles is Akumal, Mexico!

Marine Mammals to Experience

I am excited to say that I have swam with dolphins while on the Emerald Coast several times.

They have never gotten close enough to pose a hazard or touch, but they are very curious and love racing boats that are near the coastline; this is when they will occasionally trail off to say hello.

Another marine mammal that comes by are manatee or sea cows.

It only happened once, but this past June while on the beach with my family, a group of manatees swam up to say hello and hang around for about an hour while people took pictures and went to see them.

After that hour they just went along their way, but still just an amazing experience!

Exploring Vibrant Coral Reefs

While the Emerald Coast is not known for extensive coral reefs, there are still pockets of colorful corals and sponges that provide shelter and food for various marine species.

Exploring these vibrant coral ecosystems is a highlight of snorkeling in the area.

If you decide to take off from snorkeling and go diving, there are some spots where Coral Reef conservation and growth are prevalent; any dive shop will be able to steer you in the right direction.

Planning Your Beach Adventure on the Emerald Coast

Best Time to Visit for Optimal Beach Conditions

Timing your trip to the Emerald Coast is crucial for optimal visibility and marine encounters.

Consider factors such as water temperature, weather conditions, and peak tourist seasons.

I would have to say mid August to the beginning of October is the absolute perfect time of year to come down.

Most of the people have gone back home, the kids have started back to school, and the beaches are much less crowded.

The best part is that the temperatures go down to a livable condition but the water is still warm from the lingering summer heat.

Coastline Accommodations and Amenities

Choosing accommodations near beach spots and facilities that cater to vacationers can enhance your overall experience.

You cannot go wrong if you’re looking for any of this all along the Emerald Coast.

I have tailored this article for public beach access, however nearly all of the resorts and hotels have beautiful beaches to relax in and there are plenty of guided tours to be found around the area.

Exploring Beyond the Beach: Other Activities on the Emerald Coast

Most of what there is to offer along the coast I mentioned previously, but here are a few more examples if you are still looking for something to do after you get done on the sandy shores.

Explore some of the top rated tours and things to do along the Emerald Coast below:

Beachcombing and Shelling

The Emerald Coast is renowned for its pristine beaches, offering excellent opportunities for beachcombing and shelling.

Discover unique seashells, sand dollars, and other treasures washed ashore.

You can also bring out a metal detector for any missing jewelry that people inevitably bring along with them to the beach to lose.

Kayaking and Paddleboarding

Explore the stunning coastline of the Emerald Coast by kayak or paddleboard.

Glide through calm waters, witness marine life from above, and discover hidden coves and inlets.

There are just so many wildlife reserves and inland waters to enjoy these activities that you cannot miss out.

Fishing Excursions

For those who enjoy angling, the Emerald Coast offers excellent fishing opportunities.

Join a fishing excursion and try your luck catching a variety of fish species, including redfish, snapper, or even tarpon.

I joined a charter in Destin to catch some Red Snapper and after 3-4 hours of fishing we went back in and they cleaned everything and bagged it up for us.

We fried it up immediately and I have never had fried fish better than this in my life.
