I’ve just returned from an amazing trip to the Dominican Republic, during which I spoke to one of our guides about the best month to visit Punta Cana (and in general, the DR). I’ve written this kind of post before, and thought I’d do it again in order to share what a local expert things is the best time of year to go to Punta Cana!
I do want to start off by saying that everything is relative. Personally, coming from a country like Norway, no matter when I go to Punta Cana I am going to have an amazing time. Even if it’s during rainy season and I get drenched every day – I am sure I am going to have a better time than in freezing Norway.
But still, I fully understand that when planning a trip you want to know some of the basics, including the best time (and the worst) to travel to the Dominican Republic. And whether or not you need a passport in Punta Cana (the answer: you do).
So, let’s dive into it!
Quick Punta Cana Travel Guide
Where to stay: Punta Cana is located on the east coast of the Dominican Republic, with loads of high-end all-inclusive resorts lining the coastline. Most visitors to Punta Cana opt to stay at one of these resorts, as it truly is a destination for relaxing and enjoying the Caribbean climate. Popular resorts include Dreams Macao Punta Cana, Impressive Premium Punta Cana and the Hard Rock Hotel.
Top activities and tours in Punta Cana:
- Half-Day ATV and Water Cave Adventure ($65)
- Adults-Only Coral Nursery Snorkelling Tour with Lunch ($114)
- Half-day Dominican Republic Cultural Tour ($60)
- Full-day Santo Domingo City Tour ($95)
- Small-group Cruise and Snorkel Tour ($99)
Packing for Punta Cana: Punta Cana is hot year-round, so you obviously want to pack your swimwear, flip flops and light summer outfits. Resorts usually have a casual dress code, but won’t allow swimwear in the restaurants. So pack a few summery dresses or shorts and tops for dinner as well. Don’t forget reef-safe sunscreen, sunglasses and a good book, and read through my all-inclusive packing list before your trip!
Airport transfers: There are plenty of vendors and sellers waiting for you at the Punta Cana airport, so finding a taxi or transfer to your hotel is not a problem. However, if this feels a little overwhelming to you, I recommend booking a transfer in advance – for ease of mind. Our transfer by taxi (booked upon arrival) to our hotel cost $30 USD, whilst booking a transfer in advance would have been less than $15 (this is the highest-rated one).
The best time of year to visit Punta Cana (Monthly Breakdown)
Punta Cana has a tropical climate with two distinct rainy seasons. From April to June and September through November, rainfall is common, with the latter period typically witnessing heavier downpours. Those are considered the rainy season (or even monsoon season).
Additionally, the region is prone to hurricanes from June through November. For travelers seeking the best weather conditions, Spring and Winter are considered the optimal times to visit Punta Cana, offering pleasant temperatures and minimal rainfall.
We visited in March, and had perfect weather our entire stay.

Punta Cana weather by month
Below I have tried to break down each month of the year, with an indication of whether that month is a good time to go to the Dominican Republic and Punta Cana.
As mentioned above, winter and spring is the best time of year to go, and this will be reflected below.
- January: High season (i.e. more tourists).
- February: High season (i.e. more tourists).
- March: High-ish season (i.e. more-ish tourists). Dry, great weather. No hurricanes. Speaking from experience, I think March is the sweet spot between the busiest crowds and great weather.
- April: Still nice and warm, fewer crowds, but be prepared for rain.
- May: Still nice and warm, fewer crowds, but be prepared for rain. More seaweed.
- June: Hurricane and rainy season. More seaweed.
- July: Hurricane season. More seaweed.
- August: Hurricane season. More seaweed.
- September: Hurricane and rainy/monsoon season.
- October: Hurricane and rainy/monsoon season.
- November: Hurricane and rainy/monsoon season.
- December: High season (i.e. more tourists).
Below I have outlined this all in a table, to hopefully give you a clear overview of which month you should visit Punta Cana. Of course, this is completely individual (for example, some people may mind seaweed more than others).
| Month | Season (crowds) | Weather | Ave. Temperature | Seaweed |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| January | High season (more crowds) | Dry | 77 F / 25 C | Normal |
| February | High season (more crowds) | Dry | 77 F / 25 C | Normal |
| March | High season ending | Dry | 79 F / 26 C | Normal |
| April | Low season | Rain | 81 F / 27 C | Normal |
| May | Low season | Rain | 81 F / 27 C | High |
| June | Low season | Rain + Hurricane | 82 F / 28 C | High |
| July | Low season | Hurricane | 83 F / 28.5 C | High |

The best time to visit Punta Cana to avoid seaweed
Similar to Cancun, Punta Cana’s beaches can be prone to seaweed during certain times of year. All though it is present year-round, the “worst months” for seaweed is usually from May to August (i.e. the summer months).
Therefore, if you want to avoid seaweed in Punta Cana, visit outside of these months. Keep in mind though, as you can see from the table I made above, there is no “low” season for seaweed.
Even the best beaches in Punta Cana can’t avoid it, however if you stay at selected beach resort, you might be lucky enough to have staff members combing the beach for seaweed every morning. Pretty extravagant (we experienced this at our resort – read my review here).

What is the worst time to go to the Dominican Republic?
Some travelers argue that the worst time to visit the Dominican Republic is during the hurricane season, which typically runs from June to November.
Others believe that the period from September to November, characterized by heavy rains and monsoons, is the least favorable.
Despite these concerns, it’s worth noting that hurricanes rarely make landfall on the island, and although the rainfall during these months can be intense, it is usually short-lived.
Ultimately, personal preferences play a significant role in deciding. Personally, I would take some intense rain in the Caribbean over Norway in November any day.

When is hurricane season in Punta Cana?
Hurricane season in Punta Cana is from June to November. That doesn’t necessarily mean that June to November is the worst time to visit Punta Cana, because the hurricanes rarely hit the island.
However, if you want to have more of a guarantee that the weather won’t affect your plans and excursions whilst in Punta Cana, you might want to consider avoiding those months.
