Where to stay: Tromsø is a small and walkable city, so you’ll find that there are lots of hotels close to the city center. My personal favourites are Clarion The Edge, the Scandic Ishavshotel and the Radisson. Most northern lights tours will actually pick you up from outside the latter two (the hotels are right across the street from each other). The location for this experience is Breivikeidet, where you will have views of the beautiful Lyngen Alps as you go. The drive from Tromsø is about 45 minutes, and the bus is heated and comfortable.
As with the first tour on the list, you’ll be paired up with another traveller on your sled, and will be taught how to work the reigns and go about dog sledding. Then, the two of you will take turns being seated on the sled, and being the one standing in the back doing all the work!

It was stressed to us during the briefing that happy people mean happy dogs, shown how to pet the dogs, how to make sure they were safe etc. When we got to the dog farm, each dog had their own kennel, with space around it and looked well cared for. The briefing was very comprehensive and Anna made sure everyone was clear on what they needed to do. Thermal suits, gloves etc were all available, and once suited up we headed to the dog farm and met our dog team with strict instructions to cuddle and make sure we were comfortable before we headed out. The scenery around Tromso Husky was spectacular and we were soon wizzing along. When we got back to the Husky Farm we spent more time with the dogs before heading back to the base camp, and having hot drinks and soup. Keep in mind, this is actually closer to Bardufoss than Tromsø, but the hosts are super welcoming in helping you arrange either public transport or finding your way to them in a car.
Upon arrival, you’ll head out on your private dogsledding experience, and the next day you’ll enjoy a slow morning with breakfast (and the dogs if you prefer).

As temperatures can get quite low, it’s important to wear a wool baselayer for extra warmth – make sure you also bring gloves and a warm hat! Even though every dog sledding tour will provide you with a polar suit to keep you warm, they won’t provide any base layers.
Wool is absolutely vital. I remember that my dog sledding guide shook her head at an Italian tourist as we were putting on our thermal/polar suits, as he had some fancy branded (probably expensive) clothes, but all were cotton. She said she saw this all the time.
So, if you take just one thing away from this article: you must wear wool!
In order to stay comfortable while mushing your huskies, having the right pair of shoes is critical. Insulated boots with good grip will be essential for navigating slippery trails and deep snow, and I always recommend wool socks when packing for Norway in winter.
