On my most recent visit to Tenerife, I rented a car and drove around the entire island to explore its beaches, and had a great time doing so! If you are visiting Tenerife and are considering a road trip, I couldn’t recommend it enough. My friend and I spent a full day driving around, exploring beaches, towns and viewpoints along the way.
When it comes to the beaches of Tenerife, I’ve talked to many travelers who have visited the island, and I have my own personal preferences. Where to stay: The south of the island is the most popular area to stay in, as this is also where the airport is. The towns of Los Cristianos and Playa de Las Americas are vibrant tourist towns with great beach-front resorts such as the Hard Rock Hotel Tenerife and Hotel Cleopatra Palace. In the north of the island you’ll find quieter towns such as Puerto de la Cruz, with charming restaurants and lots of spots where you can watch the waves crash into the island.

Below I have split the best beaches in Tenerife according to which side of the island they are on. When people are wondering where to stay in Tenerife, it is usually a question of whether they should stay on the north or the south side of the island.
Therefore, I have arranged the beaches accordingly, starting with the best beaches in Tenerife south.
Side note: don’t make the mistake I did once and trust everything you read on the internet. When looking for some new beaches to explore, my friend and I were left at the top of some cliffs (after taking a very harsh turn off the highway) with no beach in sight. Just because locals swim there doesn’t mean there’s a beach to be found. However, you can trust that the beaches I have included on this list all exist!

Playa de la Tejita is a large beach near the airport in Tenerife south. It’s a great place to visit if you’re looking for the best beach on the island for kitesurfing and windsurfing. The beach is quite long and wide and offers plenty of space for both sunbathing and swimming.
The beach is also quite windy, so it’s popular with kitesurfers. There are several walking trails along the beach, so you can explore the area while enjoying the views.
If you’re looking for something to do while at Playa de la Tejita, there’s a small beach bar where you can grab a refreshment and relax in the sun. There are also beach chairs available to rent if you’d like to stay a while.
Additionally, there is a large parking lot with free parking, so you can easily access the beach without having to worry about parking fees. Just drive carefully, as the gravel road leading into the parking lot is bumpy.

Note, it is a public beach, even though you have to enter the resort to access it.
To access Playa Abama, you’ll need to take a charming little train down to the beach. Alternatively, you can park at the resort at the top of the hill and walk down. This is because the parking space is extremely limited, further adding to the beach’s secluded charm.
Once you arrive, you’ll find yourself surrounded by tranquility and natural beauty. The soft sand beneath your feet and the gentle sound of waves crashing against the shore create a serene atmosphere that is perfect for relaxation.

Best Beaches in Tenerife North
Below I’m excited to share some of my absolute favourite north Tenerife beaches with you. On my last trip to the island I stayed on the north side of the island (in Puerto de la Cruz), and had such a great time.
Most of the beaches in the north are volcanic, but you will find a white-sand beach on the list too. From golden sand to crystal clear waters, the north side of Tenerife has plenty of stunning beaches to explore. Here are a few of my top picks for the best beaches on the north side of Tenerife.
#7 Playa del Castillo
Playa del Castillo is a mesmerizing beach located in the outskirts of Puerto de la Cruz. It stands out with its stunning volcanic black sand, which adds a unique and dramatic touch to its beauty.
The beach has a clear flag system that indicates safety measures, ensuring a secure and enjoyable experience for visitors. During my last visit, there was a red flag on the beach most days due to the massive waves crashing over the shore.
There are beautiful palm trees lining the beach, providing shade and a tropical ambiance. It is about a 15-20 minute walk from the center of Puerto de la Cruz.
#8 Playa de Los Guios
Playa de Los Guios, located in the charming town of Los Gigantes in Tenerife, is a gem that deserves a spot on every traveler’s itinerary. Nestled next to the picturesque pier, this small beach boasts black sand, adding a touch of mystique to its natural beauty.
The beach is also located right in the center of town, making it easily accessible for anyone staying in Los Gigantes.
As you dip your toes into the crystal-clear waters, you’ll be enthralled by the stunning backdrop of towering cliffs that surround the beach. These dramatic cliffs create a mesmerizing setting, and are the reason for the town name.
While the viewpoint above the beach offers breathtaking panoramic views, it’s important to note that there is currently a sign indicating “no public access” due to safety concerns. The gravel road leading to the viewpoint can be treacherous, so it’s best to admire the beach and cliffs from the sandy shores below.
Despite this restriction, the allure of Playa de Los Guios remains undeniable, and its serene atmosphere and captivating vistas make it a must-visit destination for anyone exploring the wonders of Tenerife.
#9 Playa de Las Teresitas
Playa de las Teresitas is another great beach for travellers to Tenerife. Located in the outskirts of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, the largest city on the island, this expansive beach boasts pristine white sand and stunning turquoise waters.

Side note: my friend and I paired a visit to this beach with a shopping trip to Santa Cruz – where they have the only Primark on the island (very exciting for those of us that live in countries without Primark).
#10 El Bollullo
Playa el Bollullo in Puerto de la Cruz is by some regarded as the most beautiful beach in Tenerife. With its stunning black sand and breathtaking surroundings, it offers a unique and captivating experience for visitors.
What sets Playa el Bollullo apart from other beaches is its secluded nature, making it a favorite among those seeking tranquility and privacy (and one of my favorites).
To reach this hidden gem, take a small hike along the cliffs from Puerto de la Cruz, adding an element of adventure to your journey. Basically, head to the end of town, around the Hotel Semiramis, and walk up to the car tunnel. The trail is next to the tunnel (keeping the ocean on your left).
Once you arrive, you’ll find a small restaurant nestled on the beach, where you can indulge in delightful tapas and refreshing drinks while taking in the picturesque views. With its serene atmosphere and unspoiled beauty, Playa el Bollullo is truly a must-visit destination for those exploring Tenerife.
