As we all know, Instagram has been growing and growing over the past few years, gaining over 800 million monthly users. Out of these, it is said that 500 million users are on Instagram daily, making the potential for growth on the platform insane. But how exactly do you grow your Instagram in 2018? Instagram growth, as we all know, is one of the more difficult aspects to the platform, especially for brands and bloggers looking to grow their influence.

How to grow your Instagram in 2019

There are many ways to grow your Instagram, and in this list, I have compiled some of the ways I see becoming bigger and more beneficent in 2018 than before.

#1 Take advantage of new features

My number 1 advice for people looking to grow their Instagram is always this; whatever Instagram throws your way, use it! This also includes newer features, such as the ability to follow hashtags and being able to highlight stories.

So, in 2018, grow your Instagram by making sure to stay on top of any changes. This is easily done by paying attention to the ‘NEW’ story that will pop up at the top of your feed when you open Instagram.

Trust that the Instagram algorithm always rewards those that go along with it, and that it is likely to penalise those that hesitate or refuse to go along with it.

#2 Focus on your community

Growing your community on Instagram is becoming more and more important, especially as new shady tactics for getting followers are emerging. You can buy 100k followers, but you can’t buy their likes, comments and sense of affection for you and your brand.

Make simple changes to your feed, such as asking questions at the beginning of your caption, and making a note of which followers often leave comments. Then, go ahead and check out their profile – engaging with their photos. This will make them feel extra special and build the sense of community around your brand.

Basically, stop obsessing with new followers, and spend some time each week focusing on the ones you already have. You’ll be extremely happy you did this once you hit 10k and have more than 50 likes on each photo.

Also, potential followers see the comments on your photos and how you respond to them! Make them want to be a part of your tribe!

#3 Go live once a week

Instagram Live is a feature that many people still don’t use, months after it was introduced. Using Instagram Live can not only help build your community, which we know is very important, but it is also letting the algorithm know that you are there!

The latter is one of the most important aspects of growing your Instagram. The algorithm has caused quite a lot of trouble for many and has made it incredibly difficult to be seen by your followers.

Using Instagram Live can help combat this, as it tells Instagram/the algorithm that you are there, relevant and still active. Even if you only have 5 people tuning into your Live, you can leave it in your stories for the next 24 hours for an even greater reach.

The reason I see many people (including myself from time to time!) not using Instagram Live to grow their Instagram is simple: it’s pretty damn scary! And the longer you go without doing it, the scarier it gets. What do you talk about? What do you do? Luckily, there are plenty of ways to use Instagram Live for growth, and once you get started you’ll see that it’s not as scary as you think!

So, make a new resolution to go live once a week, fortnight or month! You can plan in advance what you want to cover, so you don’t feel overwhelmed.

#4 Ask your audience what they want

Apologies in advance if this makes you go ‘duh!’, but you’ll be surprised by how easy it is to forget this!

Your followers are the reason you are where you are, and they will be with you every step of the way as you grow your Instagram. Therefore, don’t forget that you are there for them, and that they decide whether to like your posts, leave comments and follow you.

So once in a while, take some time to ask them in a caption what they want to see more of. Ask if they are liking your latest photos, or if they want to see something different.

What I also suggest doing is using your Stories for this. With the Poll feature on Instagram, you can ask countless questions! Start with simple ones like these:

– Did you like my newest photo? (YES/NO)
– Do you want to see more photos like that? (YES/NO)
– Which of these photos did you prefer? (PHOTO 1 / PHOTO 2)
– Are you enjoying these behind-the-scenes* shots (*replace with whatever is relevant)? (YES/NO)

In short, there are plenty of ways to ask your audience what they think and prefer, and this will help you continue to grow on Instagram. It will also help build your community, as your followers will really feel as if you care about them and the fact that they follow you.

#5 Plan better

If you are serious about growing your Instagram, 2018 should be the year of planning for you. No more posting at random times when you feel like it, no more posting whatever you have in your phone that day, and no more inconsistency.

An important rule of thumb when it comes to posting on Instagram is that you have to stay consistent. Whether this means posting once a day or 5 times a week, make a plan and stick to it.

One of my ‘Instagram resolutions’ for this year is to plan my feed better, and I’m doing this using the Content Planner (the world’s first physical planner for Instagram, social media and blogging!). With the Content Planner I can plan my Instagram posts ahead, and it has been golden in keeping me consistent and on top of everything I need to get out there!

In general, the better you plan, the more you are setting yourself up for success when it comes to Instagram growth! I learned this the hard way through years of trying and failing.

Now, tell me!

Going live is such a great tip! I think many people (especially those just starting out) are nervous to go live but it’s a great way to get in front of your followers and remind them of your account – especially when the algorithm starts to bury your account among all the others!

Great tips!
