It’s been a year since the last travel recap, and it’s hard to believe how fast the year has gone! In addition to traveling and seeing loads of the world, and getting to cross quite a few new countries off my list, 2016 was also the year I finished my Masters thesis and got my first grown-up job.
Wondering how I managed to keep traveling while writing my Masters thesis and studying full-time? Check out this post!
My favourite travel moments of 2016
Snorkeling with Sea Turtles in Mexico
One of my favourite trips of the year was the Riviera Maya, Mexico, where I spent the majority of my days in the water. Snorkeling with wild sea turtles and stingrays was an incredible experience! If you are in the area, make sure to hit up Akumal Beach, where you can rent your snorkel gear (ignore all the people trying to sell you guided tours), and just walk into the ocean to meet your new friends!
Getting PADI Certified in the Maldives
This has got to be my absolute favourite of all of the amazing experiences I’ve had in 2016. Scuba diving opened up a whole new world for me (literally), and I can’t wait to keep practicing my new-found passion. I got PADI Scuba Diver Certified in one of the most beautiful countries in the world, and can’t wait to get my Open Water Certification next!
Celebrating New Year’s in Sydney
Growing up I used to watch the fireworks and New Year’s celebrations from Australia on the TV, as they are almost 12 hours ahead of Norway. Getting to experience it first hand (and calling my Mum from ‘the future) was an incredibly fun experience, and one I’m glad to have crossed off my bucket list.
Learning about Italian Food & Wine in Rome
Spending a week strolling around one of my favourite cities was a blast, and getting to join a fun food tour made everything even better! Raise your hand if you think you love wine and pasta more than me.
Spending a weekend playing with friends in Copenhagen
Copenhagen was loads of fun, and included a lot of shots, a limousine rental and hangover days spent on a tourist bus. The perfect weekend, in other words. If you are visiting the city with your friends and would like my two cents on how to make the weekend unforgettable, head this way.
Celebrating Halloween in Seattle
The US is the place to be for Halloween, and this year I was lucky enough to have a stopover in Washington. The Seattle nightlife did not disappoint, and we ended up having an absolute blast!
Staying at Disney’s Aulani in Hawaii
During the trip to Hawaii there was one thing I had to get crossed off my list. As a huge Disney fan, staying at the Aulani on Oahu Island was a must – and it sure was worth the price tag! From the fun waterslides and relaxing lazy river, to the character breakfast and fireside storytelling, the stay was a huge success.
Relaxing on one of the most beautiful beaches in Asia*
*According to TripAdvisor.
The island paradise of Boracay in the Philippines is not to be missed, and all though I only spent 3 incredibly relaxing days there, it’s at the top of my list of recommendations. There are mixed opinions on when to visit (and whether to visit at all), but personally I couldn’t have had a better time.
Skiing in the Norwegian Mountains
Spending a weekend up in the mountains is just what you need during dark and busy Winter days. Waking up to the views of snowy mountains and cabin roofs helps, too. I had a great weekend skiing with the family, and love the fact that we start skiing at such a young age in Norway. Even my youngest niece (3) owns a pair of skis!
There’s no doubt that 2016 has been an amazing year when it comes to traveling, and I will work hard so that 2017 is just as good. I’m so grateful for those of you who have been following my adventures, and hope you are willing to stay tuned and follow me into 2017. Make sure to find me on Facebook and Instagram to stay up to date!
